The Best Treatments for Dry, Sensitive Skin
Category: Acne

If you have dry or sensitive skin and you suffer from acne you’ll need to take special care to, not only cure your acne, but to take care of your skin. The majority of acne treatments will dry out your skin as they are made to stop overproduction of oil and if you have dry skin this will just make things worse. Your skin will become flaky and irritated. If you have sensitive skin the ingredients in many of the acne treatments may increase irritation and redness so you need to be particularly careful which remedies you use.

Dry and Sensitive Skin Treatment

As we get older our skin tends to become dry as the cells start to make less sebum. Collagen and elastin in the skin are damaged and are repaired less efficiently, leading to less elastic, drier skin. Also as women move toward the menopause estrogen levels decrease which also causes dryness. Dry skin is also caused by cold weather and for those of us with sensitive skin it can easily be irritated by many of the ingredients in make up and skin care creams and lotions as well as fragrances or rough fabrics.

Acne Treatments For Dry or Sensitive Skin

1. Cleansing

A skin care routine including very gentle cleaning with a very mild cleanser and moisturizing is necessary if you have sensitive or dry skin. Cleansers that can be purchased specially for those who suffer from acne are not really appropriate for these skin types. They have very harsh chemicals for curing the acne but will cause irritation and redness on sensitive skin. You ought to select a milder cleanser as an alternative that contains only very mild ingredients and won’t any more irritation to your skin. Do not wash your face too frequently and never scrub vigorously or use a harsh washcloth in an attempt to clean off the dirt that is thought to be the cause of acne. This will just cause increased irritation and distribute the bacteria that cause acne all over your skin which will inevitably give rise to more breakouts. Washing your face twice a day is sufficient using a gentle soap. You can use either your hands or a boiled, soft washcloth or preferably use disposable cotton pads.

2. Moisturizing For Dry or Sensitive Skin

You should use a very good moisturizer on dry skin but ensure you use one that is light and will not increase the oil on the skin and worsen your acne. Heavy lotions and creams are inappropriate as they will clog up the pores and set off more irritation.

3. Acne Remedies For Dry and Sensitive Skin

Some of the chemicals often used in acne treatments include vitamin A derivatives such as retinol, salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide. For sensitive or dry skin choose one with a very low concentration of the active ingredient to begin with so that you can see your skin is affected. If it doesn’t cause redness or irritation you could increase the concentration. Do not use all over the face but use a only a small amount only in the problem area and only apply once a day until your skin becomes more used to it. You could also think about using a natural cure for acne such as tea tree oil, either in a purchased product containing tea tree oil, or by making a solution of pure tea tree oil diluted in water and using on your problem areas. Tea tree oil has proved to be almost as effective as benzoyl peroxide but is much less drying on the skin.

In Conclusion

Dry and sensitive skins often do suffer from acne and require particular looking after so that you do not make the condition of your skin much worse while you are treating your acne. Always use acne treatments with as mild ingredients as you can and consider trying acne home remedies as a replacement for the harsher commercial products available.
