What Does Heartburn Feel Like?
Category: Heart Disease

What does heartburn feel like? Pyrosis, is the medical term used for heartburn and can be a very unpleasant condition. The main feeling of heartburn is a burning sensation, but identification of the condition can be determined via other factors. The breastbone or sternum is the most common location for heartburn pain. People who suffer from heartburn which is said to be one in five of us, will experience heartburn at least once a week.

The non funtion of the lower esophageal sphincter is what causes heartburn. This sphincter is normally the part of the body that keeps the contents of the stomach in the stomach. It also separates the contents of the stomach from the esophagus. The burning painful sensation in the chest is created by the malfunction of the sphincter. This is due to the fact that the acidic contents of the stomach can travel up the esophagus.

Heartburn – how long does it last? Heartburn pain lasts anywhere from a few minutes to several hours, and often worsens when the patient is lying down. It can sometimes feel as though food gets stuck in the chest when eating and it can be difficult to swallow. In some cases, a sour or acidic taste may be experienced as the burning sensation travels up the throat.

While this painful, burning sensation is an annoyance, for most people it is never more than that. Frequent heartburn, however, in some instances, can result to further complications. Frequent heartburn is known as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and over the long term it can result in ulcers or even esophageal cancer.

Lifestyle conditions can contribute to heartburn along with smoking. The likelihood of heartburn can be increased through obesity and pregnancy as they both put extra pressure on the stomach. Similarly, tight belts, along with tight-fitting clothes can cause added pressure. The frequency of heartburn can be increased through stress or certain medications.

Those who have never had a medical diagnosis of the condition may wonder what does heartburn feel like.  In addition, other medical conditions can be mistaken for heartburn, such as angina. The pain can be eased for frequent sufferers by modifying your diet and lifestyle. Elimination of the pain should be done, at least on an acute basis by the antacids. If they don’t eliminate the paint totally it should at least lessen it. Symptoms of more serious heart conditions can be experienced. If this is the case you should see seek medical advice immediately, especially if the pain radiates down your arms or to your shoulders.
