Many problems with health are associated with aging, including cholesterol. There is good cholesterol and bad cholesterol, as you may have heard. Although having cholesterol in every cell in the body is completely normal, having high levels of bad cholesterol is exactly that, bad. And, with extreme levels of chemicals and pollutants, and the like, it is important to maintain optimum health with as few drugs as possible. That is why it is important to learn how to lower cholesterol without drugs. Cholesterol in the body is essential to build healthy cells and certain hormones. The harm comes when the levels are increased to the point where fat deposits form in the arteries making it difficult for the blood to flow through. This is why anyone with high cholesterol is at risk of having a stroke or heart attack. With that said, maintaining a healthy diet and exercising on a regular basis can keep your cholesterol levels in check and even lower those levels. Reducing the amount of dairy products that are high in fat can really help reduce those levels. More than that, learn to read nutrition labels. Reducing the amount of saturated fats and trans fats will help you lower your cholesterol. For example, trans fats are found in a vast array of foods. They come from hydrogenated oils. Regardless of what is listed and claimed on the packaging, always read the ingredients and try to avoid any product that has hydrogenated oils, even if the level is extremely low. Trans fats will not only raise the LDL, which is the bad cholesterol, it will lower the HDL, which is the bad cholesterol. Smoking will increase your LDL, as well as your risk for heart disease, cancer, and a slew of other problems. But, if you do have high LDL, you should quit smoking immediately. If you feel that you cannot quit, you don’t have to cold turkey anymore as there are specialized gums, patches, and other aides that will help you. If you are overweight, it is important to drop those extra pounds as weight is directly related to raising cholesterol levels. Choose foods that promote a healthy heart such as fruits and vegetables, fish that is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, and whole grains. Try to reduce the amount of refined foods, such as white bread, white pasta, and the like. Instead, opt for whole wheat, et cetera. Limit the amount of alcohol you drink, to no more than one or two drinks a day, and exercise for at least 30 minutes each day.
