Doctors call the condition of of hearing a ringing or buzzing sound without any external reason is called tinnitus. Tinnitus is a medical problem that causes buzzing or ringing noise in the absence of an outside cause for the noise. The sounds a person could hear are hissing, whistling, ringing, buzzing and more. Some folks find the sound is easy to ignore, but for others it can be overwhelming and difficult to cope with. This is such difficult condition to deal with that people want to know how to stop tinnitus. Stop Tinnitus- Tips Damage to the inner ear’s microscopic hair cells can cause tinnitus. However, there are many other issues that cause tinnitus. Some causes are ear and sinus infections. Ear ringing can also be caused by certain prescriptions. More serious conditions where someone has a brain tumor or has experienced trauma injury to the neck can also cause the condition. This problem is experienced by roughly 12 million Americans. It most commonly affects men more often than women, and most sufferers are over 40. There are 2 versions of ear ringing, non-vibratory and vibratory. Neither vibratory nor non-vibratory tinnitus has a definitive cure. To stop tinnitus, avoid loud noises/places (or wear ear plugs), quit smoking, stay away from caffeine and maintain a healthy weight. Stop Your Ringing Ears The first step in how to stop tinnitus is to find the underlying problem of why you are experiencing ringing in the ears. If you are having ringing in the ears because of loud noises, then there are several different ways to mask the noises so you can go about your everyday activities. You can buy devices similar to hearing aids called tinnitus maskers. These devices play other sounds that sound better than ringing. Often, too much earwax can affect the ears and cause ringing. If this is the case, your doctor can clean your ears using a curette or flush out the wax with a rubber bulb syringe and warm water. Surgery may be necessary if your ringing in the ears is caused by a turmor. Also, temporomandibular joint syndrome (TMJ) can cause tinnitus, and your doctor may send you to an orthodontist or dentist if this is found to be the cause of the problem. Your doctor my also prescribe therapies such as biofeedback, cognitive therapy, tinnitus retraining therapy, herbal treatments and dental treatments to assist in treating the condition. If you are having trouble with your tinnitus and want support from other people who are trying to learn how to stop tinnitus as well, there are support groups and counselors who work with the issue. Your doctor will be able to provide you with a list of support groups and counselors in your area and can recommend somewhere to go. The best way to prevent ear ringing is to avoid factors that contribute to the problem. It is important that you speak to your doctor about your issue.
