Bowel Movement Bleeding – Six Possible Causes
Category: Alternative

Bloody [(the adjective, not the expletive)|(adjective, not expletive)|(not the expletive but the adjective)] [aptly|best|appropriately|pertinently|suitably] [characterizes|describes|depicts|exemplifies] bowel movement bleeding. Bright red spots of blood drip into the toilet bowl or down the legs. Crimson red blood coats the stools. Scarlet red blood stains the toilet tissue. Our hearts may skip a beat in alarm. What is happening?

There is no need to be unduly alarmed yet as the hemorrhaging (technical jargon for bleeding) may be the result of any one of 6 likely reasons. As irksome as they are to our daily lives, most of the 6 causes are not severe and treatable if approached correctly. But complacency is not being advocated. Monitor intently. If bleeding continues over a couple of weeks, and especially if there is persistent pain, visit a medical doctor immediately.

With professional diagnosis and correct treatment, the problem can be rectified in no time. More [alarmingly|critically|gravely|dangerously|perilously], bowel movement bleeding may be [the result of|the consequence of|caused by|a symptom of] some [type|form|class] of cancer.

Hematochezia or Melena

Rectal bleeding is classified medically as melena (tarry or sticky black colored stools) or hematochezia (maroon colored or bright red blood). Described as rectal only for the reason that bleeding leaves the body via the rectum, the 6 causes are proctitis, anorectal fistulae, anal fissures, rectal prolapse, internal hemorrhoids and external hemorrhoids.

Proctitis

Proctitis falls within the medical group of diseases known as IBD (inflammatory bowel disease) which counts among them organs like the colon (large intestines) and the small intestines. Inflammation is a healthy reaction of the body when its tissues are damaged. Inflammation cures and inflammation damages, such is the power of this process to rebuild tissue and if left irrepressible, to weaken tissue. Erosion of the mucous membrane lining, commonly known as ulcers, can erupt to cause rectal proctitis.

Among other symptoms, bowel movement bleeding is [a frequent feature|commonly encountered|a common encounter|a frequent occurrence]. The elimination of proctitis as the cause of rectal bleeding is critical as at an advanced stage, the rectum can become perforated.

Anorectal Fistulae

Between two or more unconnected internal organs, an anorectal fistula is a link-way that cuts right through. Frequently, it digs continuously, all the way to the surface of nearby skin. An anorectal fissure opens out at the anal surface. The discharge of stools and urine via this fistula is not unheard of.

The foremost causes of anorectal fistulae are inflammatory bowel diseases, chiefly Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis and ulcerative proctitis. [Quite apart from|Aside from|Apart from|Other than] infection pus, bowel movement bleeding is also one of the symptoms.

Fistulae must be properly diagnosed as it can be due to peritonitis (abdominal lining inflammation) which can lead to loss of life. Treatment often involves tracing the full path of the fistula, surgery in conjunction with antibiotic therapy.

Anal Fissures

By definition, a fissure is a tear. A tear in the vicinity of the anus, or an anal fissure, is usually the result of extreme physical straining during constipation bouts. Relaxation of the external and internal sphincter muscles that operate the anal opening is needed during bowel motion. The internal sphincter muscles may go into spasms from pain caused by fissures, further worsening the fissure. A [dangerous|vicious] cycle [develops|ensues|follows|occurs] [with the result of|resulting in|with the consequence of] [increased|more|added] pain and bowel movement bleeding.

Changes in diet to eliminate constipation together with medication (hydrocortisone or lidocaine) may relieve the inflammation and painful spasms.

Rectal Prolapse

An unbelievably age-old disease, earliest documents of rectal prolapse date back to 1500 B.C.! A situation that is more common among elderly women; it is characterized by a visible rectum hanging out of the anus. Ligaments and muscles, including the internal and external muscles, fail to hold the rectum in place.

Coupled with that, other symptoms range from pelvic floor descent to bowel movement difficulties caused by either continual constipation or persistent diarrhea. Typically, surgery is the only treatment that is effective.

[Notwithstanding|In spite of|Regardless of] the above [disconcerting|somber|weighty|austere|grim] narration, it may be ironic relief that the most [common|frequent|prevalent] [cause of|reason for] bowel movement bleeding is hemorrhoids, both [external and internal|internal and external]. These are dealt with extensively at our site The Treatment Of Hemorrhoid.
